Laura Jane

Hey everyone!

Im Laura, a 32 year old chocolate loving, doughnut eating swimming teacher from sunny Worthing! My swimming journey started in 2018 and has been the catalyst for huge changes in my life.

What do i love most about swimming? The freedom it brings, the friends i’ve made, seeing the success stories that are unfolding all around me, developing and encouraging a healthy relationship with the water and most importantly; the reward of a happier and healthier self!

This is the year that the swimming community come back fighting, Swimathon 2021 - LETS DO THIS!!

I learnt to swim in 2015, after my physiotherapist advised me to take up swimming, it’s one of the best things I have ever done for myself, benefitting both my physical and mental wellbeing. Two years ago I featured in Swim England’s “Moving Medicine” and “Value of swimming” campaign, highlighting the positive benefits of swimming on physical and mental health.

I strongly believe that swimming should be accessible to everybody, of all abilities and ages. Frustratingly many pools remain closed, despite lockdown being lifted, to this end I have taken the opportunity to discuss this both on the radio and my local TV news programme.

More recently I have started my swimming teaching/coaching journey with North East Disability Swim Club, I am planning to commence my Level 1 swim teaching qualification. This year, 2021, is the sixth time I taken part in Swimathon. This year I am taking on the 30.9km challenge, because it’s a new challenge, alongside a 5km, on the 11th September,  during the Swimathon festival weekend. If my sister is running a half marathon (on the 12th September) I’m swimming one!

Naomi Acton

I am Naomi, 40, married mum to two boys and a Police Officer and I love to swim!! I'm a self taught swimmer and swimming is my happy place, whether in a pool, lake or sea, the water makes me feel soooo good and washes away my stresses and anxieties. It also gives me the chance to combine my love of challenging myself for charity and Swimathon is a fave of mine! I started with the shorter Swimathons, worked up to 5k, then Triple 5k and now I've signed up for the new 30.9km challenge!

If I can do it, then you can too! #SwimForAll

Daniel Carpenter

I’ve loved swimming my whole life, from lessons as a child to playing water polo in my teens to swimming for leisure as an adult – via a brief stint as a life guard. For me swimming is about not just physical fitness, but also my mental health, about seeing friends but also some freedom and ‘me time’.

I’ve taken part in Swimathon events for around 20 years, ranging from short distances to the triple 5km and outdoor swimathon in recent years, and this year a triple 5km and 30.9km challenge!

For me these swims have always been a proper challenge. I’m a good swimmer, but I’ve never been a fast swimmer and these challenges really are CHALLENGES, but that’s why I love doing it. I’ve achieved something for an excellent cause!

Swimathon is the one thing that makes sure I get back in the pool every year to take on a 5k Swimathon challenge, stay healthy and help support 2 great charities.
