BADU SPORTS X SWIMATHON PROGRAMME HAS COME TO AN END

Fourteen young athletes from Hackney. Six weeks to learn how to swim. Some people would be scared at the proposition, but not BADU Sports. For years the narrative has been that 'people of colour do not swim,' but not many have delved into the reasons why there's such a disparity. From a lack of visual representation, general fear of the water or financial restraints, many hurdles prevent those from ethnic backgrounds from having a positive relationship with the water. However, through the BADU Sports X Swimathon programme, a new wave of athletes would grace the pool and help change that narrative.

As the weeks went by, all the athletes became more confident in the water, learning new techniques and pushing themselves physically and mentally. Their desire to learn something new and complete the Swimathon relay fuelled their growth and brought them closer together during their training sessions. There were some setbacks along the way, but that did not derail the group. Seeing the final day jubilation as everyone completed their final lengths in the pool was a truly euphoric moment. There were tears, smiles and a strong sense of achievement from everyone, and rightly so. From not being able to swim to swimming multiple lengths is a mighty achievement, and they inspired others to swim in their own style.

We're looking forward to our next adventure coming soon with BADU sports as we collectively look to break more barriers within sports and provide more opportunities and access.
