OLIVIA'S STORY

First-time Swimathon participant Olivia is excited to get back to the water and resume her training after lockdown, and is taking part and fundraising for a very poignant reason.

Olivia, 20, has entered this year’s Swimathon event – her first time undertaking the challenge, where swimmers take on a challenge of their choosing to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. While the event was postponed back in March, Swimathon is now back and she is ready to get back into the swing of things.

“I got back in the pool as soon as my local centre Oak Park in Walsall opened,” Olivia explains. “Without the pools I’ve felt a loss of purpose almost, I’m not a runner as I have problems with my knees so it was really hard for me to stay active.

“I was so excited but nervous as I didn’t know what to expect. It was so simple to book online – almost better than previously as you can see how many people are booked in your lane for that session. At first my stroke felt very weak and all over the place but after swimming for a few weeks now five times a week I feel as though I’m getting stronger every session. Having double width lanes also makes me feel I have so much space to swim. I feel amazing after a swim - full of energy it’s the best way to start my day.

“This is my first Swimathon. I heard about it a couple of years ago but never got around to completing one. Then my Nan passed away from cancer in April 2019 and I had a reason to complete one as the money raised from the Swimathon goes to such amazing cancer fighting charities. I have raised £175 of my £100 target through my JustGiving page, which is still ongoing, and it’s been great to combine two passions of mine – raising money to fight cancer, and of course getting back in the water!”
